The innovation and collaboration strawman

Jeffrey Phillips

I have friends who work for IBM and other large corporations in the Research Triangle Park, some of whom are experiencing whiplash. After all, they've been sent to work from home, returned to the office and then sent back to work from home several times. All before Covid struck. Covid has only caused the process to repeat. When they were sent home, the argument was that it did not matter where people worked and the company could save money by downsizing buildings.

Why Help Employees with Child Care

Tullio Siragusa

Why Help Employees with Child Care. It’s back to school and back to the office for many people. Parents are worried about child care. Employers often compete to attract great talent with benefits, and perks. Employers should not overlook huge transformations in their employees’ lives, such as the birth of a child or caring for a sick child, as work and personal time become more intertwined.

Idea to Value

Have you ever met someone who thinks that they are amazing at something, but does not realise that in fact they are below average? This could be the Dunning-Kruger effect in action. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias whereby people who are incompetent in an area don’t understand what high performance looks like in that field, and so cannot tell they are incompetent.

Avoid Addition Bias – Crop the Photo

Destination Innovation

Image by Daniel Kirsch on Pixabay. Have you noticed that almost every photo that you take with your camera or mobile phone can be improved by cropping? As we take away extraneous background details, we bring the subject into clearer view. The same is true in many other fields – taking things out can seriously improve performance. But there is a strong human tendency to do the opposite – to add features rather than to subtract – even when subtraction is an easier and better solution.

What innovation leaders share with military leaders

Jeffrey Phillips

I'm a fan of military history, and it is always striking to me to see how much new product development and innovation can learn from the military and vice versa. When we look at the military, we often don't think of innovation, or perhaps we think of the wrong kinds of innovation, like super expensive hammers or weapons systems that sound great but don't work.
