Debriefing Yourself

Last week I did a training on facilitation for a group of 10 trainers. One of the strategies we discussed was how to debrief on experiential activities using Thiagi's Six Phases of Debriefing. It occurred to me later, that these are great questions to ask ourselves as part of developing our personal reflective practice and that they can be applied to virtually any experience, not just to formal or structured learning activities.

At last week's Brandon Hall Conference , I remixed David Wilcox and Beth Kanter's fabulous Social Media game for my workshop introducing learning professionals to Web 2.0 and learning ( Go here to download the game cards if you're interested in using them). I divided my group of about 25-30 people into 6 teams (it was supposed to be 8, but apparently we had problems counting) and gave each team a deck of cards and a learning scenario.

I'm sharing a room at the Brandon Hall conference with Christine Martell , so our room is strewn with various Apple products, including her new 3G iPhone and both of our MacBooks. I thought connectivism was not about constructing? I can see having some dynamic infrastructure where the community creates the curriculum. Can Second Life be used as a reliable Corporate Training Tool?

Today, I set up a demonstration of Second Life for some of my senior management. I signed up for a conference on how to use Second Life for business, and went through some hoops with our IT department to get IT to open up the firewall for me. It did not turn out well. I had a little better luck a few weeks ago when I hosted an event for my student organization on ASTD island, although that event was ill-fated as well.

One of the common explanations for the difference of connectivism and constructivism is that constructivism happens in your head, and connectivism happens out in “the network&#. My question was what about people with autism? You have autistic savants that don’t interact with the network, but they are absolute experts in their special interest.

In Another Country

My older daughter, Jess, left on Monday for her semester abroad in Paris. A few days ago we met in iChat (video!) so she could "show me around her apartment" (i.e., lug her laptop from room to room as she narrated what was on screen) and I could hear about how things are going so far. In hearing her talk about her first experiences living among strangers in a country where they speak a language in which she is not fluent, I could see so many parallels to learning to use social media.

Wordle What You WANT to Do

Yesterday I suggested exploring your personal brand by using Wordle on your blog. Shannon Turlington tried that exercise out and found that she didn't like the results, so she "wordled" her semi-private journal where she's been writing about what she wants to do for the future.
