Is allowing the class to vote out other class members ever a good instructional technique?

Over in my other blog where I talk about everything, I made this post about a kindergarten teacher in Florida who had her class vote on whether they thought a little boy who had been sent to the office should be allowed to come back to class. It’s been reported now that the boy is in the final stages of being diagnosed with an Autism Related Disorder (ASD).

This week in class we are talking more about CSCL - Computer Supported Collaborative Learning. So far, I am a little perplexed. I need to go through the readings AGAIN. Unfortunately we are out of printer ink, so I may put in another plea to go buy a new printer tonight. This week we are covering Concept and Knowledge Maps, scaffolding, using Excel to make a concept map, and explaining academic tasks to students.

I just joined ASTD - the American Society for Training and Development. I was inspired after reading the Engaged Learning blog and chatting with the author for a bit. He is the head of the Social Learning Special Interest Group for one of ASTD’s chapters. So, are there any other ASTD members out there? How active is ASTD in the Boston Metro-West area?
